All About Bandanas

A bandana is a square or triangle pieces of cloth that are folded and worn on the body. These can come in different colors, such as green, blue, red, yellow, and black with white designs. These are often seen tied on the head or around the neck. Today, it is mostly worn as a fashion statement, but bandanas of yore had protective purposes rather than decorative ones.

Old Western movies popularized bandanas by featuring cowboys with these pieces of cloth tied around their necks. These were also used by farmers, railroad engineers, and pirates to wipe the sweat from their faces as they work. They are also used to protect the collar and the neck from gathering dust.

When cooled, these can provide heat relief on hot summer days.

Is Meat Unhealthy? The Shocking Truth

It’s easy to be scared of meat. Everywhere you look, there are nutrition gurus promoting the health benefits of plants and quoting studies supposedly condemning meat as causing everything from obesity to cancer. But is it true? Is meat unhealthy? The answer will surprise you.

The Problem with Nutritional Studies

Sometimes it seems that the evidence that meat is unhealthy is overwhelming. The media gives heavy coverage to every scientific study that seems to imply this. Big studies such as the Seventh Day Adventist Study and the China Study are commonly used as evidence that a plant-based diet is superior to an animal-based one.

But there is one problem with all this. It is essentially impossible to do the kind of study that will show conclusively that meat is unhealthy - a double blind, randomized, placebo-controlled study. People are always going to know what they are eating - it’s hard to find the equivalent of a placebo for meat. So all the studies so far have no placebo at best, or are simply observational at worst.

Many studies have found that cultures that eat a lot of meat have higher incidences of diseases of civilization such as heart disease and diabetes. However, since the other variables are not held constant, it is a logical fallacy to deduce that meat is the cause of these diseases. For example, cultures that eat more meat also consume more white sugar, white flour, and other processed foods. How do we know that these aren’t the parts of the diet causing the disease?

Learning from Modern Hunter-Gatherers

As it turns out, there are several groups of people that eat a lot of meat and other animal products and yet do not consume processed foods - modern hunter-gatherers. Groups such as the Inuit of Alaska and the Masai of Africa eat nearly all of their calories as meat and dairy… and yet they almost never get fat or get the diseases that are so often contributed to eating meat such as cancer.

It would therefore be more likely that all the studies that come out condemning meat are actually pointing the finger the wrong direction. It is processed foods such as white sugar and white flour which have the highest correlation with disease and obesity!

The Human Omnivore

Despite what many vegetarians may tell you, fossil evidence shows that humans have always been meat eaters. We do not have the multi-chambered stomachs that are characteristic of herbivores. Instead, our digestive system clearly indicates that we are meant to eat both plants and animals.

Most people think that becoming vegetarian is the best thing they can do for their health, but this is based on widespread misunderstanding of the scientific studies that are used to “prove” this point. Since many cultures have thrived on all-meat diets, it is more appropriate to assume that “new” foods are the cause of “new” diseases. If humans have done great on diets full of meat for all our existence, why would they be blamed for the host of brand-new diseases we never had before?

So, is meat unhealthy? Absolutely not! Try to eat more, as you’ll be getting several important nutrients that you aren’t getting from plants.

The latest issue of Time Magazine has a profile of Magnus Carlsen, the youngest number one world ranking chess player ever.

Intuition - the key to expertise.

According to Kasparov intuition is the key to Carlsens’ success - his ability to ‘feel’ what moves have potential and give him the edge over the long term - and which moves to avoid.

Carlsen has a knack for sensing the potential energy in each move, even if its ultimate effect is too far away for anyone — even a computer — to calculate.
What built Carlsen’s amazing intuition?

Carlsen doesn’t calculate in his head what moves to make running through countless possibilities using his reasoning ability, he ‘intuits’ them - some moves feel good, some bad, some look strong, some look weak. Why? Because he’s had huge amounts of practice on online computer chess. Computer chess is on tap 24/7, and Carlsen often plays multiple games simultaneously. With all this practice - and it has to be deliberate and focused - he builds up a bank of how he feels making certain moves based largely on all the mistakes he’s made in the past. Hundreds and thousands of errors - and the bad feelings they have caused - have become translated into accurate intuitions about what moves to make - that he can’t begin to explain.

3. We need to make mistakes - lots of them. We have to learn to positively value mistakes, and the negative feelings that go with them! The more we explore through practice, the more mistakes we will make, and the more we can benefit from this in building our intuitions. Feeling bad through making mistakes - through failures - drives us to greater expertise and higher levels of excellence. This is true in chess and it is true in anything requiring expertise.
